Frequently Asked Questions

What is an installation artwork by Allan Rosenfield?
Allan Rosenfield creates installation artworks by painting an unstretched canvas on both sides. The canvases are split on the middle of one side so that they create their own sculptural/architectural space which reads as “interior” and “exterior,” depending on how they are hung and arranged. Unlike a traditional painting, Rosenfield’s canvases are either suspended on rods floating from the ceiling or draped over rods supported by sturdy industrial stands. These installations present a completely new and immersive way to experience abstract painting.

Why is an installation painting by Allan Rosenfield different from conventional art?
Conventional painting is hung on the wall. An installation painting by Allan Rosenfield IS the wall. It can be a wall of graphic lines against a subtle metallic field or a wall of joyful color. Depending on how it is configured by the artists and/or the collector, it can be both. Rosenfield’s installation paintings are not static in space. They will respond to a slight breeze or movement. Each work implies its own potential to be reconfigured and/or completely reversed. The dialogue between parts of the installation and its architectural setting invites viewer engagement. The sheer tactility of the painted surfaces of unstretched canvas also attracts involvement.

Where do large-scale installation paintings belong?
Rosenfield installation art belongs anywhere a “statement” needs to be made. These works can be intimate enough for a residence but can also dominate a space in an office, institutional, or hotel setting. They contain their own depth and create a wall of color anywhere they are installed. Allan is happy to work with collectors, curators, architects, and consultants to choose the right painting for their space. Commissions can be discussed.
